Frequently asked questions.

How often does the GSC meet?

The GSC meets once per month - the first Tuesday of every month. Each representative is a part of at least one of our committees, which may meet more frequently depending on the committee’s chair.

How big is the GSC?

The 2020-21 GSC is made up of ~40 representatives and 13 Executive Board members. In general, one representative is elected per 25 people in a program. So the GSC grows as the graduate student body grows!

What are the responsibilities of a representative?

Each representative is required to attend the GSC monthly meetings, or select a proxy to attend in their place. At these meetings, they will vote and contribute to discussions based on the desires of their constituents. A representative is responsible for communicating GSC events and efforts to the other graduate students in their program. They are also responsible for relaying graduate students needs and concerns to the GSC, so that we can address them together. The GSC will host an orientation for all new representatives before their first GSC meeting to clarify their duties.

What does the GSC do?

The GSC is motivated by the desires of its representatives. Because of that, what the GSC does is entirely shaped by the passion and motivation of its representatives - which could be you! For an idea of what we’re doing right now, visit our Intitiatives page.

Can I still participate in the Graduate Student Council without being a representative?

Absolutely, yes! The GSC and our meetings are open to everyone. We're always looking to engage with more students. Non-representatives are welcome to join any of our committees, participate in meeting discussions, and send us their ideas for what the GSC should do for graduate students. Non-representatives are only excluded from voting during our GSC meetings. If you want to get involved this way, please email the GSC President at graduate.student.council@dartmouth.edu.
