What Portfolio to Build, Why, and How to Use it for Success in Interviews and Future Project Work
"I'm good at research and science and have proof of that. Isn't that enough?" This seems like a reasonable question but being able to articulate how all the pieces of who you are and how you choose to spend your time fit together is equally as important as the science in which you excel. In this workshop, we will explore how you can bring all the elements of YOU together in a form that showcases your excellence in ways that get the notice of recruiters, interviewers, and future bosses.
If you begin to build the structure for your portfolio early in your PhD program, you will end up with a robust and integrated set of examples of your work and your abilities including science, communication, writing, team leadership, and positioning skills - all important to succeeding in your next step post-PhD.
This workshop is about setting up a structure that you populate over time. There will be workshops later in the year that go into more detail about building the content. You can choose the ones that fit the structure you create.

The event will open with remarks by Dr. Duane Compton, the Dean of Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine and include discussions on AI leadership, research frontiers, and industry collaborations.

Best Practices for Highlighting All Your Skills and Stories (for your portfolio, for networking conversations and for interviews)
YOU are a combination of many different values, skills, and experiences. By putting these pieces together in a structured way, you can use them to express how and where you can be valuable once you leave Dartmouth with your PhD. In this workshop, you will learn how to identify how to translate your experiences to meet expectations in the working world and then practice how to effectively articulate these in different scenarios and for different uses.

Monday, April 21st from 12:45pm-1:45pm
Location: Haldeman 041
Register at dartgo.org/qsa
This event will be a lecture with the purpose of educating students about the trans community, history, and legislation that has and is being passed in connection to the community.
Our keynote speaker and MC of the event is Erin Reed, an American journalist and trans rights activist. She is well known for her creation of the Anti-Trans Risk Assessment map, using data to bring awareness to the range of state-wide risk that exists on trans adults and youth. At the event, Erin Reed will speak for forty-five minutes about trans legislation and the community’s history. This fulfills our theme’s purpose of educating people about trans roots and encouraging them to be prideful of all the work that has gotten us here now.
Breakfast with Erin Reed is a limited invitation event. Please reach out to Pride staff and co-chairs with any questions.

“Visible: The LGBTQ Caribbean Diaspora” Screening and Discussion
Tuesday, April 22nd 6:00pm-8:00pm
Location: Shabazz Mural Room
Find more information at dartgo.org/qsa
“Visible: The LGBTQ Caribbean Diaspora” was filmed by Max-Arthur Mantle and published in 2018. This documentary speaks on the intersectionality of identifying as Caribbean and LGBTQ+ in the North American diaspora. This screening will provide Dartmouth students, outside of their association with the Caribbean and the LGBTQ+ community, to grasp what it means to live in a heteronormative world. Furthermore, this event will globalize our theme: “Roots of Pride,” as it does not only apply to the community in the United States, but the entire world. Hosted by Pride, Caribbean Carnival, and Black and Pan African Student Advising.

Creating 3-minute Pitches to Communicate Your Science to an 8-year-old
Often the most effective ways to communicate complexity are by using simple and clear language and relating concepts to commonplace or easily recognized representations. In this workshop, we will explore how to construct a 3-minute pitch by building the pitch and then simplifying it repeatedly until it is down to its most basic components.
You can use the methodology to create short expressions of your work for the recruiting elevator speeches and introductions of your work for all kinds of audiences.
Lunch provided!

Always Be Prepared - Simple and Effective Strategies
How do you make sure you are prepared for unexpected conversations and questions that arise in the lab or over the course of your work? There is a lot of research around success factors for working in teams and with supervisors and during our time together, we will discuss tools and approaches that you can employ to always feel prepared. The goal of the workshop is to show how a few techniques can create confidence and opportunity for you as you move through your career.
